Will book publishers go the way of record labels?

I’ve been kicking around the idea of writing and illustrating a childrens book for years so I’m always interested in learning more about self-publishing… ran across an article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that introduced me to Author Solutions Inc. Evidentially, Author Solutions is acquiring rival Trafford. Here are a few key highlights from the article:

  • In 2007 411,000 new books were published with ISBN numbers
  • Since 1995 Trafford has published 20,000 titles, from 15,000 authors

I wonder if book publishing will go the way of the record label (and the dinosaur) - extinction!? Entire article can be found here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123895881091590451.html
